English pundit and Arsenal legend, Ian Wright, has criticised Canada coach, Jesse Marsch, following his team’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland in their final World Cup group game, saying, “It doesn’t make sense.”

The former England striker expressed his displeasure about the outcome of the match whilst analysing the encounter on ITV.

Prior to the fixture played at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada were leading the Group A standings, and a draw would have been enough for them to secure their place in the knockout stage as group leaders.

Regrettably, two goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi in the 46th and 57th minutes respectively meant Les Rouges’ goal from Promise David in the 76th minute was merely a consolation.

Although both teams advanced to the knockout round thanks to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 3-1 victory over Qatar, the Swiss gained an additional advantage by topping the group.

With the victory, Murat Yakin’s men’s Round of 32 match will take place in Vancouver, allowing them to avoid travel and ensuring ample rest before the game.

In contrast, Canada will forfeit their home advantage and take a trip to Los Angeles in the United States for their initial knockout phase match.

Speaking after the match, Wright expressed his disapproval of Marsch’s cautious and indecisive tactics during the consequential game.

He said, “It doesn’t make sense to have the chance to win a match and remain in your own country, where you will benefit from the support of the fans, yet still discuss how much he believes in the spirit of this team.

“He should have demonstrated that belief from the outset of the game today, allowing them to stay here and enhance their chances.

“At times, he comes across as somewhat performative to me. I do not wish to be harsh, but it seems he is merely saying the right things for the sake of appearances.”
