Sani argued that the decision to promote the ex-president’s candidacy was an attempt to use his political stature to revive a weakened party.

Human rights activist and former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has faulted a move by the Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to drag former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race, insisting the party wants him to help it “carry the coffin”.
He condemned the decision on Monday in a now-trending post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
The former Kaduna Central senator was reacting to the recent adoption of Jonathan as the presidential candidate of a PDP faction ahead of the upcoming general election.

While describing the effort as belated, Sani noted that those now promoting the ex-president’s candidacy failed to back him when the PDP was in a stronger position to compete in 2023.
Speaking via his verified handle, he said: “If they actually wanted Jonathan, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape.
“They just now want him to help them carry the coffin.”
Sani further argued that the current move was less about giving Jonathan a realistic chance of returning to power, and more an attempt to use his political stature to revive a weakened political platform.
