Nollywood actress and film producer Bolaji Ogunmola has disclosed that making films for audiences on the social media platform YouTube is an expensive and risky venture.
The thespian made this known during a recent interview with media personality, radio/TV host, actor, and content creator Joseph Onaolapo on his programme, Jay On-air.
According to Ogunmola, YouTube was not originally designed as a platform for disseminating and viewing feature-length films.
She added that actors charge high fees, while fans often assume producers make a significant amount of money from movies with millions of views—which is rarely the case.
“YouTube was never designed for films. Film is a very expensive art form. Actors are charging ₦4–5 million for four days. The least might be ₦1–2 million,” she said.
Ogunmola also urged Nigerians to be constructive when criticising YouTube filmmakers, stressing that “even the worst film on YouTube costed money to make.”
She concluded by explaining that she and her colleagues utilise YouTube primarily because Nigeria lacks a robust formal distribution system.
