Gov. Aiyedatiwa’s determination to revitalise Ondo public water supply is taking shape

For years, the story of public water supply in Ondo State has been one of waiting—waiting for the taps to flow again, waiting for the Owena Water Treatment Plant to roar back to life, and waiting for the promise of clean and reliable water to become a reality.
Today, that story is changing.
Across Akure, the state capital, and its adjoining communities—Ado Road, Igoba, Isinigbo, Oda and beyond—the sound of machines, the movement of heavy equipment, and the tireless hands of engineers and workers are heralding a new dawn.
Beneath the earth, massive pipes are finding their way through the soil. Across the landscape, a new water network is taking shape. Day and night, the work continues.
This is the sound of a system being reborn.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s renewed determination to restore public water supply is steadily becoming visible, as the AFD-assisted Urban Water Supply Project moves forward to breathe new life into the Owena Water Treatment Plant.
The project will deliver new transmission mains from Owena to Akure, construct modern water reservoirs with a capacity of 7,500m³, and expand the distribution network across the capital city.
And the vision does not end in Akure.
Through the African Development Bank (AfDB)-assisted project, the reach of this intervention will stretch further—strengthening sanitation systems and expanding access to potable water across seven Local Government Areas: Akure South, Akure North, Idanre, Ifedore, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ondo East and Ondo West.
It is more than pipes and reservoirs. It is about bringing life back to the taps.
It is about restoring dignity to homes, improving public health, supporting businesses, and giving our people the simple but profound comfort of turning on a tap and seeing clean water flow.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon. Ayodele Akande, has continued his daily monitoring and inspection of the project sites, ensuring that the work is executed to the highest standards and completed within schedule.
