Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress Omawumi Boma Megbele-Yussuf, known simply as Omawumi, has weighed in on the widespread claim that modern romantic relationships depend on a man’s spending power, insisting that “love has always been transactional”.

The ‘Bottom Belle’ crooner shared her thoughts on the topic during a recent candid interview with Pulse.

According to Omawumi, although love has always been transactional in nature, it has become more demanding than in the past.

She further noted that while she was growing up, impressing a woman didn’t cost as much as it does nowadays

The 44-year-old artist attributed this shift to modernisation and inflation.

Speaking on the show, Omawumi said: “Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time. But during my youth, our transactions were different because you could impress your crush with just ice cream and popcorn. But now, it is an iPhone.”

The thespian added, however, that society sometimes amplifies the transactional nature of relationships by ignoring women’s reciprocation.

She concluded by suggesting that most men put themselves in this position by dating women with tastes they cannot afford.
