Ahead of the Ofala Festival 2025, themed “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Perseverance), the traditional ceremonies that precede the grand celebration are well underway.

According to a press release signed by the Media Lead, Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, Tony Nezianya, these sacred rituals are a vital part of Onitsha’s rich cultural heritage.

The festivities have already commenced with Owuwaji (Yam Festival), kicking off the season of celebration and thanksgiving.

This will be followed by Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha (spiritual retreat of the monarch) which means the monarch’s annual seclusion, where he negotiates the fortunes of the kingdom.

Next is the Ogbalido (feast of atonement) which is a sacred ceremony marking the eve of the monarch’s emergence.

The grand celebration of Ofala Festival 2025 will feature Iru Ofala (October 17), a day of majesty and splendor, reserved for the monarch and his chiefs.

It will be followed by Azu Ofala (October 18), a day for the people, when age grades troop out in colorful displays to pay homage to the monarch.
