We’re already expecting Atiku’s return to PDP – Damagum
By Jeffrey Agbo
Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Iliya Damagum, has downplayed the resignation of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar from the party, describing it as a recurring event in the party’s history.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, Atiku stated that his resignation was due to irreconcilable differences that have emerged within the former ruling party.
This is the third time he would be leaving the PDP.

However, speaking with journalists on Friday in Bauchi on Atiku’s resignation from the party, Damagum said, “This is not the first time; we’re expecting him back.”
He explained that the PDP is neither surprised nor overly troubled by Atiku’s departure, noting that the party has become familiar with his pattern of exiting and rejoining over the years.
Damagum said the former vice-president’s move fits into a historical trend, suggesting the party views the resignation more as a political tactic than a permanent split.
He added that the PDP’s calm reaction reflects either confidence in its resilience or doubt over the finality of Atiku’s decision.
Atiku has since joined the coalition on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
