Former First Lady of Ondo State, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has replied some traditionalists in Owo, Ondo State, after they laid curses on her for disrespecting the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye.

She took to her Facebook handle to call out what she described as “misplaced curses and misguided gods” in the face of a serious kidnapping wave sweeping across Owo and wider Ondo State.

It all started when the Ondo State government pulled down a Cenotaph built by her late husband and former governor of the state, Rotimi Akeredolu, in honour of the victims of the deadly 2022 St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church massacre in Owo.

Following public outcry, the state government defended its action, saying it carried out the demolition of the park due to complaints that it was cited opposite the king’s palace.

Not satisfied with the explanation, Mrs Akeredolu lambasted those responsible for the action, labelling the Olowo of Owo as a “baby oba”.

She also described Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as an “enabler”, adding that the demolition was done to settle political scores.

Her comment, drew a lot of criticism which led some traditionalists from the town to lay curses on her for disrespecting the paramount ruler.

However, while reacting to the development via the Facebook post, Mrs. Akeredolu questioned why kidnappers—rampaging across the state like they’re auditioning for a Nollywood thriller—have not been on the receiving end of the infamous wooden gods’ wrath.

“It is the mother of their children they are cursing,” she wrote, adding a barrage of return-to-sender hand emojis and declaring, “Notin do me!”

She added that she remains “#ProudlyIgbo” and bearing her signature title “#AdaOwere I”, dismissed the power of carved deities with a mic-drop: “Only a believer will be scared of carved wooden gods. AdaOwere1 no send!”

The ex-First Lady also wondered why kidnappers who abducted people in the town evaded spiritual consequences and are yet to be apprehended by the gods.

“Where are your gods when kidnappers come knocking ?” she further said.

Observers say her post was a tongue-in-cheek jab at those targeting her with traditional curses rather than addressing the real issue—kidnapping and insecurity in the state.
