Serving his second term in office, Ashafa had previously held the position of APC chairman in Otto-Awori LCDA. His political journey began in 1997 during the regime of General Sani Abacha, when he was elected Chairman of the old Ojo Local Government in a zero-party system election. Since then, he remained an influential figure in Ojo politics, rising through the ranks of the local APC to eventually lead the council.
Ashafa’s passing marks yet another blow to the APC in Lagos, which has lost several key council chairmen within the past year.
In November 2024, Oladotun Olakanle, Chairman of Onigbongbo LCDA, died, followed by the death of Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA Chairperson, Mrs. Bola Shobowale, in March 2025 after a lengthy illness that kept her away from office for nearly a year.
Additionally, the immediate past Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Toba Oke, succumbed to a terminal illness in February.
