Students of the University of Ibadan (UI) trooped out en mass on Wednesday to stage a peaceful protest against power cut at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan that has lasted 82 days – and counting.
Medical students from UI are trained at UCH.
The hospital has been experiencing power failure for the past year due to debts owed to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
IBEDC cut off power supply to the hospital in March 2024 over unpaid bills, after it had disconnected supply in November 2023 for the same reason.
The protesters, who were led by Students’ Union Government President Bolaji Aweda, expressed dissatisfaction with the situation at UCH.
“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected,” Aweda told Daily Post.
“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC.
“IBEDC has demanded that UCH settle its debt before they will restore power.”
