Nigerian highlife singer, Chinedu Okoli, better known as Flavour, has said he shares the sentiments of reggae icon, Buju Banton, who recently claimed that  Afrobeats music “lacks depth”.

The Jamaican music star sparked controversy after alleging that Afrobeats music is a “f*ckery” in an interview.

He went on to say the genre has no substance and would eventually fade away with time.

Reacting to his assertions while featuring on a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour agreed with Banton, saying the artiste was on point.

He, however, added that Afrobeats lacked depth because upcoming  African artistes are “lazy”.

Speaking during the interview, Flavour said, “I understand what Buju Banton is trying to say. Kids of today [present crop of Afrobeats artistes] don’t want stress; they just want to vibe.”

He further defended that reggae star, saying “Maybe Buju Banton is trying to awaken our spirit.”

He also distanced himself from the Afrobeats genre, clarifying that he’s a high-life singer and not an afrobeats artiste.

He attributed the boxing of every African artiste under the afrobeats genre to the Western media.
