Acclaimed Nigerian actress Omowunmi Dada has delved into her transformative portrayal of Grace Eniola Soyinka, the revered mother of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, in the newly released biopic “Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti.” Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the film premiered in cinemas yesterday, offering audiences a poignant exploration of Ms. Ransome-Kuti’s legacy as a pioneering politician, activist, and matriarch who ignited a revolution against colonialism and patriarchy in Nigeria.

In an exclusive interview, Omowunmi Dada discussed the rigorous preparation and profound emotional journey involved in embodying Grace Eniola Soyinka. Dada emphasized that her portrayal was rooted in meticulous research, immersive character study, and a deep connection to the historical material, which enabled her to bring a nuanced and authentic depiction of Soyinka to the screen.

Grace Eniola Soyinka is celebrated for co-founding the Abeokuta Women’s Union alongside her aunt-in-law, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. The union famously protested against the tax policies imposed by the Alake of Abeokuta, which were supported by the

colonial authorities. This pivotal movement marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s history, underscoring the influential role of women in the fight for justice and equality.
