A Bangladeshi court on Wednesday sentenced an Indian separatist leader and his local associate to life in prison for possessing illegal arms and carrying out terrorist activities.
The court which sat in north-eastern Kishoreganj District handed down the verdict against Ranjan Chowdhury, a leader of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULAF) and his Bangladeshi aide, Pradi Marak.
Bangladeshi security forces arrested Ranjan and Pradi at Laxmipur, Bhairab in Kishoreganj District, 90 kilometres north-east of the capital Dhaka, on July 17, 2012.
Prosecutor Shah Haque said Ranjan was indicted in charges of possessing illegal weapons, carrying out terrorist activities and staying illegally in Bangladesh.
According to Police, Rankan has been hiding in Bangladesh since 1997 and maintained contact with his group in the Indian state of Assam where they launched a movement for self-determination.
