Bayelsa Police Command dismisses LG chairman’s alarm against Sylva as ‘cult clash’ in Brass Island

By Amos Okioma

The Bayelsa Police Command on Thursday said it has restored normalcy to Brass Island in Bayelsa State following reports of insecurity and violence in the area earlier in the day.

Mr Victor Isaiah, the caretaker chairman of Brass Local Government Area, had told reporters that the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was attacked while inspecting damages with the Divisional Police Officer of Brass.

He alleged that thugs who attacked the PDP secretariat were loyal to the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).

He called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the violence in the island and bring the perpetrators to book.

Isaiah, who spoke in company of Senator representing Bayelsa East, Sen Ben Murray-Bruce, said that PDP supporters in Brass were in need of security following the proposed visit of APC chieftain, Timipre Sylva, at the weekend.

Murray-Bruce said that he would raise the matter on the floor of the Senate when the National Assembly reconvenes.

However, Spokesman of Bayelsa Police Command, DSP Asinim Butswat, in a reaction to the reported insecurity, described the incident as rival cult clash.

He said that no Policeman was injured in the incident, which was a result of clash by suspected cultists operating in Brass.

“The report we have in Brass Island is that of a clash between rival cult groups and we deployed personnel to restore peace to the area. The PDP secretariat in Brass was not attacked, we have restored peace in the area,” Butswat said.
