Of all the 17, 751 candidates from within Nigeria and neighbouring countries that applied for admission into the Niger State owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, only 4, 089 were offered admission.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, disclosed this during the matriculation of the 4, 089 lucky students offered admission for the 2017/2018 academic session, against the 8, 466 that actually participated in the admission screening exercise.

The 4, 377 others who participated in the screening were not lucky as they were denied admission, including Ghanians and people from other neighbouring countries, Maiturare said at the 12th Matriculation ceremony which held at the school’s main campus, Lapai.

According to Maiturare, “We have no fewer tham 17, 751 candidates that applied for IBBU admission from across the federation and neighbouring Ghana but we cannot take all of the applicants due to situations beyond out control”.

The vice chancellor, who however, admitted that the year, 2017/2018, has been the most challenging in recent times.

He attributed the developments to the recent increase in the number of applicants into the university.

It is not in the habit of the university to reject students but situations on ground could not help, the vice chancellor said, adding that many of the students were admitted into courses different from what they had applied for.

“We tried to encourage students to embrace the various disciplines and that is why we have about 75 per cent of the candidates admitted into 20 other courses where there are not much students from about 10 most sought after courses we offer”, Maiturare said.

The vice chancellor said, “About 75 per cent of the candidates applied for 10 of the courses on offer with most of such courses having over 1, 000 applicants, leaving the other 20 programs with just about 25 per cent of the entire applicants”.

While urging them to accept the new courses offered to them wholeheartedly and do your best to excel, the Vice Chancellor however challenged the students on the need to to adopt positive attitudes, remain agents of positive change and as well, maintain peace advocates for the citadel.
