Niger wins U-13 maiden Ex-PROS Diaspora Squash tournament

Niger State, Gideon Bala Ibrahim has emerged winners in the first

Ex-PROS (Diaspora) U-13 (Boys) National Squash Tournament, while Mercy

Afokhai also of Niger State came third in the U-16 (Girls) of the same event.

Gideon Bala defeated Ibrahim Balogun 3-0 to clinch the number one

position during the maiden tournament which held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, and watched by the President Nigeria Squash Federation

(NSF), Comrade Boye Oyelinde, his Vice, Yusuf Umar and other national

officials.

During the three-day tournament which 20 states participated,

Odunlade Adeyi of Kwara state emerged first in the U-16 females, while Nasirudeen Abdulrahman also of Kwara State clinched the number one position for the U-16 male category.

President of Ex-PROS (Diaspora), Mr. Shittu Femi Solomon, said that the championship organized by

ex-professional squash players in the diaspora was part of efforts to

plough back what they gained from the squash as a brand of sports over the years.

Shittu who also appealed to weathy Nigerians and philanthropists to support grassroots mobilization for

Squash as a way of discovering talents in rural areas.

Meanwhile, the new chairman of the Niger State Squash Association,

Alhaji Mohammed Babujee, has called on Governor Abubakar Bello to intervene and

unravel the circumstances surrounding non-payment of allowances to

coaches and other supporting staff that accompanied players to the

recent Nigeria Youth Games.

Babujee spoke after receiving the players and coaches who made the state proud in the maiden Ex-PROS Squash

(diaspora).

He said that he was worried that failure to pay the coaches could

dampen their zeal to prepare the players for future challenges.
