Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata has held talks with Jose Mourinho over signing a new contract at Old Trafford after impressing his new coach, according to reports.
Despite being sold to United by Mourinho in 2014 when the pair were at Stamford Bridge, Mata has proven himself to the Portuguese boss and could be about to sign a new contract.
According to The Sun, the Spaniard is “desperate” for a new deal at Manchester United, with his current £130,000-a-week ($168,000) contract expiring in two years.
Mata has featured in all but one of United’s matches in the Premier League so far this season, scoring in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth on the opening weekend and again on Saturday.
The 28-year-old linked up well with Paul Pogba in the Manchester United midfield and struck the second goal in a 4-1 win over champions Leicester City at Old Trafford.
Mata, who moved from Valencia to Chelsea in 2011, was voted player of the year at Stamford Bridge for two seasons running.
But Mourinho’s arrival at Stamford Bridge saw him offloaded to Old Trafford in January 2014.
