Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in Pompomary Camp, Damaturu, Yobe State, have received relief materials from Federal Government to cushion their sufferings.
Presenting the materials at the IDP Camp, Minister for Women Affairs, Aisha Jummai Alhassan, said that she was in the state for advocacy and enlightment visit and interaction with the IDP.
The items brought by the government include 250 pieces of 3/6 mattresses, 250 pieces of 2/6 mattresses, 500 mosquito nets, 500 pillows, 250 towels, 500 pillows, 250 wrappers, 500 cartons of detergents, 500 cartons of wash soap, 500 slipass and 500 baby pampers.
While welcoming the Minister at the Government House, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State said that the visit would give her the opportunity to see and be informed about the various efforts being made by the government to address the problems of women generally and those of widows and orphans in particular.
He said, “It is my expectation that the visit will further lead to the identification of areas of collaboration with the Federal Government for the development of the state.”
The governor further revealed: “We have only 3,000 IDPs being maintained in the official camp. The serious problem facing us now is how to rehabilitate, resettle the affected victims and reconstruct their houses which were either vandalized or completely razed down by the insurgents”.
He added that the task of rebuilding the damaged structures was enermous and beyond the financial capacity of the state government to shoulder alone.
He said that in his recent briefing to President Muhammadu Buhari he indicated that about N2 billion would be required for the purpose.
Gaidam also appealed for the support and assistance of the Federal Government to enable Yobe State government undertake the execution of the projects.
According to him, the state government has empowered 17,800 women with N178 million through the Ministry of Women Affairs which reached the 178 electoral wards of the 17 local government areas of state.
