Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that the electoral umpire requires N10 billion to conduct 80 re-run elections nationwide.
Prof. Yakubu disclosed the figure in Abuja Wednesday while defending the 2016 budget proposals of INEC before the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Electoral Matters, adding that the amount would be used specifically for the various logistics and other activities for the re-run elections to be held between now and March 19, this year.
He also noted that for the rerun exercises, INEC would wait for the outcome of the various election tribunals and other court rulings before deciding on the next course of action.
Meanwhile, giving the breakdown of the commission’s 2015 budget performance and the 2016 proposals, a former acting chairman of INEC and current commissioner, Mrs. Amina Zakari said the commission was allocated N62.537 billion in 2015 out of which N18.99 billion was for personnel cost, N8 billion for capital projects and N2.5 billion for overheads.
