The emerging women’s athletics force in Nigeria Rosemary Chukwuma made a good stride to her quest to clinch her first Confederation of African Athletics senior championships title by dominating the women’s 100m heats in the open day of competitions.

Chukwuma, one of the few US based athletes who managed to make the trip to Accra, Ghana, established herself as the woman to beat in the event.

“I feel so excited being here to compete. For me it is just go out there and execute and have fun. I’m happy all three Nigerian women made it to the semis,” said Chukwuma after the race.

Two other Nigerian women Tejiri Ugoh and Miracle Ezechukwu won their heats and made it to the semi-final and officials are looking forward to a clean sweep of the medals in the final.

In the men’s 100m race, Ashe Favour had a false start and was given the marching orders. However, he was reinstated on appeal and later ran to qualify for the semi final. Chidera Ezako who showed up strong in his heat also entered the semi-final.

“False start can happen to anyone, even Usain Bolt false started. But we are happy that our women did us proud we can look forward to an exciting final,” said the Chairman National Sports Commission Elite and Podium Performance Board Committee Yusuf Alli at the University of Ghana stadium venue.

He is also slowly conceding the sprint battle to the francophone counting, but assured that with the total support of the NSC DG Bukola Olopade and others bouncing back for Nigeria’s male elite athletes will happen.
