Police have arrested and detained a 20-year-old man for allegedly raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Olodo Community in Odeda Council of Ogun.

State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Akeem Sumonu by officers stationed at Olodo security post.

The arrest came after the victim’s mother, identified only as Christiana, reported to the police that Sumonu allegedly violently attacked and raped her daughter in October, and threatened her to keep it a secret.

A police source said due to the fear the suspect instilled in the teenager, she kept quiet about the incident until her mother noticed her unusual behaviour and injuries sustained during the alleged assault, per The PUNCH.

Ogun Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola, a Chief Superintendent of Police, disclosed that “The victim hid the incident from her parents until the complainant noticed unusual signs on her body.

“She then confided in her mother, revealing that the suspect had forcibly raped her, causing her to lose her virginity, and had threatened her not to tell anyone.”

After his arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed to assaulting the girl and threatened her into silence.

Odutola said the situation worsened when the medical report revealed the teenage girl was eight weeks pregnant, suspected to be a result of the rape.

“The suspect has been arrested and detained. Further investigation will take place once the case is transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Odutola added.

A similar incident occurred in March when a pastor named Adeleye Dada was accused of raping and impregnating the teenage daughter of one of his church members in the Gasline axis of Ifo Council in the state.

The suspect allegedly took the girl to another church and told the pastor that the girl was participating in a prayer vigil that required her to remain in the church.
