Yusuf, female weightlifter, wins Nigeria’s 4th medal

Yusuf, Nigeria’s 19-year-old weightlifter added a bronze to the 3 medals already secured by the country at the Commonwealth Games after lifting a total of 212KG in Women’s 64kg class

Nigeria’s Islamiyat Adebukola Yusuf, secured the second bronze medal for Team Nigeria at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in the Women’s 64kg weightlifting event on Monday, August 1. 

The event which took place at the National Exhibition Centre saw the  19-year-old lift a total lift of 212KG to finish third behind Maude Charron (Canada) and Cochrane Sarah (Australia) who finished in first and second positions respectively.

Charron, who set a new Games Record on her way to winning the gold medal, had a combined lift of 231KG,  while the 216KG combined lift by Cochrane was good enough for the Silver medal position.

Monday’s bronze medal is the fourth medal for Nigeria in the weightlifting event where the country had earlier won two gold and another bronze medal.

Adijat Olarinoye and Rafiat Lawal won gold medals in the women’s 55kg and 59kg weightlifting categories respectively, while Umuoafia Edidiong Joseph won a bronze medal in the 67kg male category.

All the medals picked up so far by Nigeria at the competition have all come from weightlifting
