Yobe introduces new species of exotic grasses

-

Programme Manager of Yobe Livestock Pilot Development Programme (YLPDP), Dr. Mustapha Gaidam, has said that new species of exotic grasses have been adopted for cultivation.

He said that the measure would boost animal feeds and overcome high costs of feeds in the livestock industry.

Mustapha disclosed this Wednesday in Damaturu, while speaking with nigerianewsflight.com on increasing costs of livestock feeds, as the exchange rates continue to rise.

His words: “We have introduced Nappier, Centrosema and Stylothensis grasses as well as Lablab and Mucuna beans. The Programme has also established demonstration farms to identify favourable areas for mass production of these livestock grasses.” He further disclosed that the grasses which are rich in nutritional values; but not common in the state, would be planted to improve animal feeds across the state.

“Livestock farmers will also be trained on cultivation of the grasses,” he assured. He also expressed optimism that the cultivation of the grasses would check the massive migration of herders and cattle breeders in search of pastures and water points. According to him, “This will also improve the production of rich and healthy beef and dairy products in the state and boost economic prosperity; and eventually get out of this economic recession.”
