Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has said that former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is the best candidate for the top job of the World Trade Organisation.
In a tweet, Dangote said the world would benefit from the tested experience and skills of Okonjo-Iweala.
“In these challenging times, the WTO needs the renowned skills and tested experience of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala to lead the organisation through identified obstacles and strengthen its position as the prime facilitator of international trade. A vote for her by all is a step in the right direction. I fully endorse the candidature of Okonjo-Iweala to lead the WTO,” he said
The WTO is the world’s trade watchdog, setting the rules and checking the excesses of member states. The 66 year-old Okonjo-Iweala is seeking the position which has just been vacated by Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo.
As WTO chief, If Okonjo-Iweala wins, should would be expected to manage the trade war between China and the United States, provides leadership in the face of rising protectionism and steer the world to new trade pastures in the face of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
