Better disaster risk management mechanisms at sub-national levels in Nigeria are to be deepened between the World Bank and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to stem the tide of natural disasters across the country.
Francis Nkoka, World Bank Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, made the pledge when he led a delegation of the bank’s officials on a visit to NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
Nkoka also:
- Said the visit was to strengthen the existing partnership between the World Bank and NEMA on enhancing disaster risk management mechanisms, particularly at sub-national levels across Nigeria.
- Stressed the bank’s interest in deepening collaboration with NEMA to support the implementation of strategies that strengthen emergency preparedness and response capacities at state and local government levels.
- Spoke on reinforcing institutional frameworks and improving operational readiness across all tiers of government.
Umar expressed appreciation for the support of the World Bank and reaffirmed the commitment of NEMA to a robust partnership that fosters timely and effective disaster risk management nationwide.
The visit underscores the critical role of stakeholder collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s resilience to disasters and improving emergency response systems.
