The World Bank Fadama III project has supported 640 households; and
communities with irrigation facilities, highbred livestock and other food items under the bank’s North-East “security and livelihood”
Resettlement and Economic Rehabilitation (RECR) programme.
The Yobe State World Bank Project Coordinator, Musa Garba, disclosed this, while briefing newsmen on the implementation of the Fadama III at Buni/Yadi.
He said that 48 communities in Gujba and Gulani council areas, which were affected by Boko Haram insurgency have been targeted to
implement livelihood and economic rehabilitation project.
He said that each of the communities comprise 40 households; and in every household there are about 15 family members to benefit and pick up their lives after the five-year Boko Haram insurgency in the two affected councils.
His words: “The Fadama III, World Bank project package includes; food and livelihoods, with the food assistance comprising four main food staples of rice, maize, sorghum, millet; and vegetable oil, salt and sugar to support the people with balanced and nourished meals.
“The households livelihood package; was in livestock of small
ruminants of three female goats and a male goat or, four sheep and a ram or chicken and guinea fowl layers for local livestock production and sale to earn income.”
He said that the project has crop components irrigation package consisting of seeds, water pumps, sprayers, insecticides and fertilizer among
Others.
The project, according to him, has also established grains processing
plant in Buni/Gari to process grains for household and commercial use by displaced persons, who have returned to liberated communities. The grains processing plant has reduced the burden of traveling out to process assorted grains as was the case in the past. “We have four milling machines for maize, millet, sorghum and rice that could add more value to returning farmers,” he said.
The project also constructed market stalls and toilets in four communities of Bumsa, Gujba, Bularafa and Bara to promote commerce and economic activities of returning displaced persons.
Usman Garba of Bumsa community, commended Fadama III project for
providing the communities with various agricultural and livestock production facilities. He said that the stalls had facilitated commercial activities in the targeted communities, as well as, protect market goods and wares.
