Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, has announced his retirement.
His decision to quit officiating football matches was confirmed in a recent statement made available to journalists by the Football Association of Slovenia.
Vinčić’s resignation comes only weeks after the tournament—which saw Spain emerge as the new World Cup champions—ended in North America.

Since the global football competition concluded, the Slovenian official has come under severe criticism for his handling of Argentina’s physical approach during their 1-0 loss to La Roja.
Vinčić sent off Argentina’s Enzo Fernández just before extra time, but players and coaches from both teams clashed after he blew the final whistle.
FIFA has since launched an investigation into the ugly scenes that marred the final day of the tournament.
Announcing his retirement, the Slovenian FA wrote: ”A week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vinčić officially concluded his historic refereeing career at the top of the world.”
