US warns Green Card holders with criminal records risk losing status, deportation
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a warning to lawful permanent residents, commonly known as Green Card holders, cautioning that those with prior criminal records could face revocation of their status and possible removal from the country.
The statement was made on Tuesday in a notice aimed at informing Green Card holders about key immigration enforcement rules.
CBP emphasised its commitment to national security and law enforcement, stating it remains focused on “protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders and enhancing the nation’s economic security.”
“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” the agency stated.
Reiterating that permanent residency is not guaranteed, the agency underscored the government’s authority to revoke Green Cards from individuals with criminal histories.
“Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused.
“In addition to immigration removal proceedings, lawful permanent residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention,” the agency said.
