A “technical problem” caused an error in the initial draw, causing UEFA to void it and order a new one.

UEFA in a statement said:  “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

“As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone.”

They initially pitted United against French giant, Paris St-Germain, in what would have been a mouthwatering encounter that would have seen Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi play against each other.

Defending champion Chelsea were to face reigning Ligue 1 champions Lille, while the most successful English team in the competition, Liverpool, were to come up against Red Bull Salzburg.
