United States President, Donald Trump has said he would welcome the idea of running against one of his predecessors, Barack Obama, if such  an opportunity presents itself .

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, the 78-year-old Republican claimed Americans want him to run for a third term.

The United States Constitution only allows presidents to stay in office for just two terms of four years each, but Trump has continued to describe a third term as a “possibility”.

Asked about the prospect of a presidential race pitching him against former president, Obama, who served two terms, Trump said he’ll like the idea. 

“That would be a good one, I’d like that,” he replied.

Speaking during an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump insisted he was “not joking” about the idea of a third term.

The business mongul served from 2017 to 2021 during his first term in office before being sworn in for his second term in the White House on January 20, 2025.
