United States of America President, Donald Trump has said European nations must start paying yearly reparations to his country if they want a review of the tariffs he imposed on them.
He made this known in an interview video released recently by CNN.
Speaking in the clip, Trump boasted that his tariff announcement has attracted investment negotiations to the US.
Trump, however, stressed that Europe needs to pay the US a lot of money yearly as reparations.
He further noted that the tariff he imposed on the European nations brought about calls for dialogue.
He said, “We take their cars—Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW. We take their millions of cars. They don’t take anything from us.
“We put a big tariff on Europe. They are coming to the table. They want to talk, but there’s no talk unless they pay us a lot of money on a yearly basis, number one for the present but also for the past.”
Trump’s administration’s announcement of 25 per cent tariff on all automobile imports on April 2, 2025, sparked a global trade war.
While leaders across the world have condemned Trump’s tariff, the administration has maintained that the decision was to close the imbalances in world trade.
Following the latest tariffs imposed by the US, Jaguar Land Rover, in a statement at the weekend, announced a plan to pause all shipments to the US.
