Tinubu expresses sadness over death of ex-Concord MD, Doyin Abiola

Tinubu hailed the deceased for her immense contributions to journalism and gender equity.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday  expressed sadness over the death of veteran journalist and former MD of National Concord,  Dr. Doyin Abiola.

This was conveyed in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

TheNiche had earlier reported that Doyin, wife of late Bashorun MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82.

According to family sources, she died peacefully at 9:15 p.m. following a period of illness.

While acknowledging the immense contributions of the deceased to journalism and gender equity, President Tinubu said she “laid a foundation for generations of women,” stating that her “impact on our democracy was even more profound.”

He further added, “Doyin embodied integrity, tenacity, hard work, commitment to excellence, and dedication to public good and democratic good governance.

“Nigerians will never forget Doyin Abiola’s leadership during her illustrious journalism career, her championing of women’s empowerment, and her commitment to democracy.

“I commiserate with the Abiola and Aboaba families, her only daughter, Doyinsola, and the government and people of Lagos and Ogun States.

“May her soul rest in peace. May this nation be blessed with more women of Doyin Abiola’s calibre and pedigree.”
