Former Governor of Sokoto State and current Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has predicted that the 2027 general elections will likely follow the pattern of the 1979 polls rather than that of 2023.

He made this known on Friday while appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today.

According to Tambuwal, his prediction is based on the dynamic nature of politics and the fact that the current political environment is already changing.

Speaking during the interview, he said, “Politics is dynamic, and virtually everything about people is dynamic. 2027 may not necessarily be a replay of the 2023 elections.”

He went on to add that new alliances and shifting interests among politicians and voters would shape the next election significantly.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives also compared the coming election to the 1979 presidential contest, which featured political heavyweights like Shehu Shagari, Obafemi Awolowo, and Nnamdi Azikiwe.

After that election, Shagari’s National Party of Nigeria (NPN) won with 5,688,857 votes, representing 33.77 per cent of the total votes. He was followed by the flag bearer of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Awolowo, who garnered 4,916,551 votes, amounting to 29.18 per cent of the votes cast.

On their part, Azikiwe of the Nigerian People’s Party (NPP) came third with 2,822,523 votes (16.75 per cent), while Aminu Kano of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) and Waziri Ibrahim of the Great Nigeria People’s Party (GNPP) came fourth and fifth with 1,732,113 and 1,686,489 votes, representing 10.28 per cent and 10.01 per cent of the votes respectively.

Recalling the historic poll, Tambuwal said, “I see a replay of 1979 in 2027 rather than the 2023 general elections. You wait and see. The dynamics today are different.”

The former Sokoto governor, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also committed to supporting any presidential aspirant who emerges after the primaries of his new party are concluded.
