A former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, on Sunday attended the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

The convention, organised by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee — which has the support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike — had officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as observers.

Many delegates, while addressing the convention, including former senator Zainab Kure and House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, described Wike as the national leader of the PDP.

Former Senate President Saraki acknowledged Wike but did not describe him as the national leader of the party. Lamido avoided acknowledging individuals. He simply greeted everyone and delivered a speech urging party leaders to reflect on where the PDP was in 1998 and where it stands today.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, was also present at the venue, which was decorated in PDP colours and symbols.

The convention, scheduled to run from Sunday to Monday, is expected to produce new party officials who will steer the affairs of the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement on his X handle, spokesman for the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka, said: “INEC is represented here by two National Commissioners, Prof. Sani Adams (SAN), and Dr. Ken Ukeagu.
