Premier League Bottom side, Southampton dumped Carling Cup holders, Manchester City out of the competition after beating them 2-0 in a match played at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night.
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, rested key players such as Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne with this weekend’s derby with Manchester United at Old Trafford in mind, but nothing must detract from a vibrant and brilliant display by Southampton.
The home side opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when a fine assist from Lyanco was crisply finished off by Sekou Mara, who made it 1-0.
Southampton doubled their advantage five minutes after a lofted long-range finish by Moussa Djenepo beat City keeper, Stefan Ortega, who was out of position.

Guardiola in the second half threw on De Bruyne and Haaland but it was to no avail as Southampton were resolute and defended their lead with fierce determination which earned them a semi-final berth at Wembley Stadium.
Although the Saints boss, Nathan Jones, still has a lot of work to do, both in terms of moving the team out of the relegation zone and winning over the skeptics, the spirited performance will encourage the fans.
Southampton now have a vital Premier League clash against fellow strugglers Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday and will travel to Merseyside with their confidence lifted.
