British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has expressed support for Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky despite falling out with United States President, Donald Trump.
TheNiche had earlier reported that Trump labeled Zelensky a dictator without elections, warning that he had better act quickly to secure peace or risk losing his country entirely.
in a scathing post on Truth Social, the 47th US President wrote, “I love Ukraine, but Zelensky has done a terrible job, his Country is shattered, and MILLIONS have unnecessarily died – And so it continues…”
Trump added, “He (Zelensky) refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls, and the only thing he was good at was playing Biden ‘like a fiddle’.
“A Dictator without Elections, Zelensky better move fast or he is not going to have a country left.”
However, speaking on Wednesday via a statement issued by his office after a phone call with Zelensky, UK PM, Starmer backed his Ukrainian counterpart.
The statement read, “The Prime Minister spoke to President Zelensky this evening and stressed the need for everyone to work together.
“The Prime Minister expressed his support for President Zelensky as Ukraine’s democratically elected leader and said that it was perfectly reasonable to suspend elections during wartime, as the UK did during World War II.”
The statement from Starmer’s office did not directly address Trump’s comments.
Rather, it further read, “The Prime Minister reiterated his support for US-led efforts to secure a lasting peace in Ukraine that would deter Russia from any future aggression.”
