Nigerians supporting human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, have vowed to go to the streets and demonstrate if he is not released by the Nigerian police.
This was made known in a statement signed and released by the National Coordinator of the ‘Take It Back Movement’, Juwon Sanyaolu.
Several news outlets had earlier reported that Sowore was allegedly arrested and detained at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja on Wednesday.
The politician, who is under investigation following alleged “forgery and inciting disturbance”, was honouring a summon by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, when he was picked up.
Reacting to the development in the statement, his supporters threatened to stage a nationwide protest over his purported detention.
Speaking on the issue, Sanyaolu said the AAC chieftain’s incarceration was “politically motivated,” adding that the police denied him access to the petition against him and the identity of the petitioner.
He went on to say, “Accordingly, the Nigerian people, students, workers, the public, and the entire membership are hereby put on notice for a nationwide protest against the continuous harassment of Sowore, and unlawful use of state institutions to suppress dissent.”
