African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, will be leading a protest at the police headquarters on Thursday over the continuous detention of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist.
Ojukwu, a reporter with FIJ, was arrested over a report on abuse of contract procurement allegedly by Orelope-Adefulire, senior special assistant to the president on sustainable development goals (OSSAP-SDGs).
Ojukwu was arrested on May 1 in a manner fitting abduction, with his whereabouts unknown until a search revealed he was at Force CID in Panti, Lagos.
At the time of writing this report, Ojukwu has neither been arraigned in court nor granted administrative bail despite uproar from citizens against the clampdown.
Sowore, in a post on his X handle, said they will also be demanding the repeal of the Cybercrime Act, which is the legal excuse police latch on to arrest journalists who tell uncomfortable truth against their supposed paymasters.
He said: “An end to #CybercrimeAct2015Now. #FreeDanielOjukwu. Let’s all be there at 9 am tomorrow at the @PoliceNG HQ in Abuja #EnoughIsEnough ‘An injury to one is an injury to all’ #RevolutionNow.”
In another post, political activist, Deji Adeyanju, said they will also demand the suspension of the cyber security levy recently announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He said: “Tomorrow protest at the Force Headquarters will also be an opportunity to protest against Cyber security levy and the continuous harassment of citizens and journalists with the amended Cybercrime Act.”
