South Africa’s Afro-pop star, Zahara dies at 36

Zahara, who gained fame for her 2011 album, ‘Loliwe,’ had been hospitalised since November due to liver complications

Popular South African Afro-pop singer, Bulelwa Mkutukana, better known as Zahara, has passed on after battling liver problem.

She died in a Johannesburg hospital on Monday night, at the age of 36.

Her death was announced on Tuesday in a post shared on her Instagram page by her family.

“She was a pure light, and an even purer heart, in this world. A beacon of hope, a gift, and a blessing to us and countless people around the world” the statement read.

Also reacting to her demise, the South African Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, in a post on his official X, tweeted: “I’m very saddened by the passing of @ZaharaSA. My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry.

“The government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.”

Zahara, who gained fame for her 2011 album, ‘Loliwe,’ had been hospitalised in November due to liver complications. But her situation deteriorated last week after she was reported to be unresponsive.
