Souness slammed the Man City star while discussing the performance of the second-ranked team in the world at this year’s tournament on ITV.

Prior to the commencement of the competition, De Bruyne was quoted to have said Belgium stood ‘no chance’ of winning the World Cup this year because they are an aging side.

However, after Belgium crashed out from the tournament on Thursday evening having played out a stalemate with fellow European side, Croatia, Souness went for De Bruyne’s jugular.

According to the TV pundit, the comment he made was ‘totally unnecessary’ and he gained nothing from making the statement.

He went on to say, even if he felt that way, he should have kept his thoughts to himself, as it was likely to affect morale inside the camp.

Souness said: “Totally unnecessary. You gain nothing. If that is your thoughts, then keep them to yourself.

“That would not have spread a happy atmosphere inside the camp. Why he’s chosen to do that, only he can tell you.”
