The Senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, Ibrahim Lamido, has formally resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made his decision known on Saturday in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.
According to Lamido, he took the step following escalating insecurity and concerns over the welfare of his constituents.
Speaking via his verified handle, he said: “I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect.”

He further explained that his resignation was prompted by the APC’s failure to effectively tackle the growing security challenges in his district.
“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them. This defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent,” he added.
The federal lawmaker, however, did not indicate his next political move or whether he plans to join another party.
Lamido’s decision comes amid rising fears over banditry, kidnappings, and other violent incidents in parts of Sokoto State, which have increasingly affected local communities.
