Ghanaian-American singer and songwriter Ama Serwah Genfi, better known as Amaarae, has argued that Janet Jackson ought to be labelled the “King of Pop” instead of her late brother, Michael Jackson.

She made this known recently while speaking to Pitchfork about the impact of Janet Jackson’s 1997 album, The Velvet Rope.

According to the ‘Sad Girls Luv Money’ crooner, although she was just three years old when the album was released, she was “conscious” enough to recognize how impactful it was.

She further stated that had she been old enough at the time, she “would have played it non-stop” because it was “so vulnerable, sexy, aggressive, and experimental.”

While discussing the record, Amaarae said: “Every Janet Jackson album is fantastic. But The Velvet Rope is the best. If I was conscious in 1997 when the album dropped, I would have played it non-stop. It’s so vulnerable, sexy, aggressive, and experimental.”

She added, “Janet, to me, is the real King of Pop. No shade to Michael Jackson.”
