Former Senator Shehu Sani has decried the “eye-service” in the N20 billion donation pledged to the fund raising scheme Remi Tinubu launched on Tuesday to complete the abandoned National Library project in Abuja to commemorate her 65th birthday.
Remi announced that she raised more than N20 billion in pledges so far, with Sani describing her as being “lucky,” unlike her predecessor Turai, wife of then-President Musa Yar’Adua, who did not go far in a similar initiative.
Sani recounted that many people who pledged to donate billions of naira to Turai’s International Cancer Center failed to redeem their pledges after Yar’Adua’s death in May 2010.
“First lady Senator Remi is lucky to raise N20 billion for the National Library that has been abandoned for close to 40 years,” Sani posted on his Facebook wall.
“That is commendable and well appreciated. Her Excellency Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua was not that lucky; many people who pledged to donate billions to her International Cancer Center refused to redeem their pledge after Yar’Adua died.
“The project remained stalled for over a decade along Airport Road, Abuja.
“Most donations are ‘eye service’ for people in power. Our First lady should make sure they ‘send alert as quick as possible’. Happy Birthday to the Distinguished First Lady”.
