Shehu Sani says after Imam turned pulpit for politics, he left

Shehu Sani is an activist who became a senator in 2015. He lost the return ticket of the APC because he became critical of its actions

A former senator who represented Kaduna Central at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has said that he stopped praying at a particular mosque after the Imam turned his pulpit for propaganda.

He said in a tweet: “Yesterday, I performed my Friday prayer at a different mosque because the Imam of the former mosque has turned his pulpit into a propaganda platform for the Government, following the ‘opposite footsteps’ of Bro Femi Adeshina.”

Shehu Sani has been consistent in his criticism of public officials who abuse the privileges of their office.

In 2016, Shehu Sani chaired a Senate committee that exposed a contract scam against the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

Lawal was said to have used his privileged position as the SGF to award an N500 million grass-cutting contract to himself.

Shehu Sani chaired the ad hoc committee and presented its interim report in December 2016, recommending that President Muhammadu Buhari sacked the SGF for indulging in fraud.

Buhari, in attempting to clear Lawal of any wrongdoing, sent a letter to the then Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to explain away the fraud. No sooner had Saraki finished reading the president’s letter than Shehu Sani rose to disprove Buhari’s claims even though they were members of the same party at the time.

Buhari had claimed that the report that indicted Lawal was problematic because it was signed by three of the seven members who made up the committee. But Shehu Sani said seven members, not three as claimed by the president, signed the report.

Shehu Sani also said that Lawal was invited to appear before the hearing of the committee, adding the SGF’s office secretary received and acknowledged the invitation.

Further, Shehu Sani said the advert was placed in three newspapers for Lawal and other parties involved to appear.

Shehu Sani then made this remark which became a quotable quote. “Corruption in the Judiciary and others is treated with insecticide while corruption in the government is treated with deodorant.”
