Human rights activist and former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has pointed out that the 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has remained consistent in his position on the removal of the petroleum subsidy.
The former Kaduna Central Senator made this known on Wednesday in a now-trending post he shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) page.
His comment comes amid renewed debate among opposition politicians over the future of the fuel subsidy.
Earlier, African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his African Action Congress (AAC) counterpart, Omoyele Sowore, had promised to restore the fuel subsidy regime if elected president in 2027.

However, Obi’s running mate in the election, Rabiu Kwankwaso, promised that the NDC and his principal, Obi, would, if elected, restore the fuel subsidy, but in a different form.
Asked during an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday if it would be difficult for the NDC to campaign in the North-West, where there is support for the return of the subsidy, the former Kano State governor said, “No, no, no, look. We are bringing subsidy in our own way.”
Wading into the debate on subsidy removal, Sani noted that Obi has remained consistent and realistic, unlike some of the other opposition presidential candidates.
He further said the former Anambra State governor refused to alter his position on subsidy removal to win popular support or make promises he believes cannot be fulfilled.
Taking to his verified handle, he wrote: “Peter insists on maintaining the removal of petroleum subsidy; he remains consistent to his own vision; never changing his views to appease and please the gullible masses by promising the impossible. He is refusing to buy the throne with fake currency.”
