SDP only ideological opposition ahead of 2027, says Adebayo

Presidential hopeful and leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has declared that his party represents Nigeria’s only true ideological opposition as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview, Adebayo argued that opposition politics in Nigeria has largely been shaped by ethnic and religious considerations rather than clear policy alternatives. He said the SDP distinguishes itself through its commitment to social democratic principles anchored in the Nigerian Constitution and the party’s manifesto.

He criticised what he described as “transactional opposition,” driven by personalities and short-term political interests, insisting that the SDP is focused on long-term national development.

“We don’t follow personalities; we follow processes,” he said, stressing the need for governance built on principles that promote the greatest good for the majority.

On concerns about the party’s visibility, Adebayo said the SDP is prioritising grassroots mobilisation over media exposure. He disclosed that the party has continued to record steady membership growth through digital registration, adding that lessons from the 2023 elections—particularly low voter turnout and logistical challenges—have informed its current strategy.

Addressing the issue of vote buying, he warned that the increasing influence of money in politics poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy and economic stability. He said the party is focusing on voter education to encourage informed decision-making at the polls.

Adebayo also expressed concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, noting that key reform recommendations, including those of the Uwais Electoral Reform Panel, were not fully implemented. He, however, maintained that credible elections remain possible if citizens actively participate and demand accountability.

Outlining his priorities, the SDP leader identified security, prudent management of public finances and job creation as critical areas requiring urgent attention. He attributed Nigeria’s economic challenges to systemic failures, including revenue leakages and weak governance structures.

He urged Nigerians to move away from personality-driven politics and embrace a system grounded in fairness, accountability, and social investment, stressing that citizens must play an active role in shaping the country’s democratic future.
