Ruto declares 7-day national mourning for Kenya’s ex-PM, Odinga

Ruto also confirmed that the late Odinga would get a state burial.

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced seven days of national mourning for opposition leader Raila Odinga.

​He made the announcement on Wednesday after Odinga’s family confirmed his death.

​Odinga died on Wednesday in India at the age of 80 after suffering a cardiac arrest during a morning walk at an Ayurvedic hospital.

While reacting to news of his demise, Ruto, who confirmed that Odinga would receive a state burial, also described him as “Kenya’s foremost statesman and one of Africa’s greatest sons… a giant of democracy, a fearless freedom fighter and a tireless warrior of good governance.”

​The Kenyan president also said he would postpone all his public engagements in the coming days “as a mark of respect.”
