RULAAC writes Lagos CP, demands urgent update on car theft probe of impeached Imo LG Vice Chairman
The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has petitioned the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for a detailed status update on the case of alleged car theft against Prince Matthew Igbokwe Onyekaozuru, the impeached former Vice Chairman of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
In a formal letter dated May 5, 2026, RULAAC expressed concern over the lack of public information on the progress of the case more than three weeks after the suspect’s arrest.
Igbokwe was apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command in connection with alleged car snatching and vehicle vandalisation in the Festac axis of Lagos. On April 8, 2026, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi confirmed to TheNiche that the then LG Vice Chairman was being investigated over allegations of car snatching and vandalism.
In a status update request to the Lagos police boss, CP Fatai Tijani, RULAAC highlighted several areas of concern, including the current status of the suspect – whether he remains in custody, has been granted bail, or has been charged to court.
The civil society organisation also questioned the progress of the investigation, measures taken to secure evidence, and any possible inter-state collaboration with the Imo State Police Command.
The petition further noted reports of alleged attempts to tamper with evidence, including the removal of items from the suspect’s residence in Imo State shortly after his arrest.
“We respectfully request a clear and updated status report on the investigation,” the letter signed by RULAAC Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated.
The advocacy group described the case as a critical test for public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, especially regarding accountability for politically exposed persons. “No individual, regardless of status or office, should be above the law,” Nwanguma emphasised.
