RULAAC queries Ogun police over handling of fatal reckless driving case

By Ishaya Ibrahim

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has petitioned the Divisional Police Officer at Makun Police Station in Shagamu, Ogun State, raising serious allegations of compromised investigation and potential cover-up in a fatal road accident that claimed the life of Mrs. Stella Osukwu on January 19, 2026.

The petition dated February 17, 2026, and signed by RULAAC Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma, highlighted several infractions in the investigation.

The accident involved a Hummer bus (registration number AMG 659XA) operated by a transport company called “God is One,” driven by Mr. Chimezie Adinjo. The vehicle was en route from Ajegunle, Lagos, to Orlu, Imo State, carrying only two passengers at the time—both of whom died instantly.

According to the petition, officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and police at the scene attributed the crash to reckless driving. The case was assigned to Makun Police Station under Investigating Police Officer Inspector Alomaja Murorun (also known as Okala).

Among the infractions noted by RULAAC includes; allegations that a retired police officer is acting on behalf of the transport company to influence proceedings, reports of communications to the police suggesting an out-of-court settlement between the company and the victims’ families—despite no such agreement having been reached with Mrs. Osukwu’s family and the driver’s release from custody without apparent charges or transparent updates.

Another infractions noted by the petition include; the driver’s reported return to operating commercial vehicles, posing ongoing risks to public safety.

RULAAC describes the incident as a grave criminal matter involving reckless driving and negligent homicide, which cannot be resolved informally or administratively. It warns that the handling of the case raises fears of investigation compromise, failure to prosecute, denial of justice to the families, and threats to road safety.

RULAAC demanded a comprehensive written update on the investigation status. It also demanded a clarification of the legal basis for releasing the driver, and confirmation on whether the case file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The advocacy group sought assurance against any attempts to terminate or compromise the case via alleged settlements, and immediate steps toward diligent prosecution if evidence supports criminal liability.

The petition, copied to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, urges authorities to prioritize justice, accountability, and public safety to maintain confidence in law enforcement.
