Robbing NYSC member lands man in 10 years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty

One Ayomide Olayemi has been jailed 10 years for robbing an artisan and a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Olayemi had pleaded guilty to a two-count amended charge of attempted felony and stealing and Judge Modupe Nicol-Clay of an Ikeja High Court sentenced him following a plea bargain.

The Judge handed down the verdict based on the recommended term of 10 years imprisonment stipulated in the plea bargain agreement.

Nicol-Clay held that the court was satisfied that Olayemi willingly entered into the plea bargain agreement and understood its implications.

“This court finds the agreed punishment of 10 years to be adequate in view of the convict’s admission of guilt and show of remorse,” she ruled.

“Ayomide Olayemi is hereby convicted for the offence of attempt to commit felony and stealing.

“He is hereby sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. The sentence shall commence from the date of his remand, being Jan. 3, 2019.”

The convict was first arraigned on 14 November 2019 and initially pleaded not guilty, per the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He later entered into a plea bargain and changed his plea.

Before the judgment, state Counsel Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daud  had told the court that Olayemi committed the offences on 31 December 2018 at about 12pm in the Surulere/Ojuelegba axis of Lagos.

She said the convict stole four automated teller machine (ATM) cards, an NYSC identification card, a driver’s licence, a Samsung C5 gold mobile phone, and N2,050 cash.

According to the prosecutor, the stolen items belong to an artisan, Hunwanu Adebayo; and an NYSC member, Adekanmbi Olubusayo; and the offences contravene Sections 76(6) of the Administration of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Sections 406(1) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
